ONE OF US condemns the European Parliament’s vote calling for EU-funded abortion tourism

EU Treaties Ignored, Ideology Imposed

The One of the US European Federation expresses its deep regret following today’s plenary vote in the European Parliament adopting the “My Voice, My Choice” (MVMC) resolution calling for “abortion tourism” financed by the EU and European citizens.

With 358 votes in favor, 202 against and 79 abstentions, this vote represents a serious ideological overreach and a troubling disregard for the EU Treaties, which clearly establish that the regulation of abortion, pertaining to the domain of criminal justice, falls exclusively within the competence of Member States. By supporting this resolution, the European Parliament has chosen ideology over law and political messaging over legal responsibility.

Despite opposition and the presentation of counter-resolutions led by the EPP and ECR Groups, which sought to reaffirm subsidiarity, respect for national sovereignty, and EU legal limits, the resolution was nonetheless adopted.

One of Us recalls that abortion has no legal basis as a fundamental or human right under EU or international law. It is neither enshrined in any binding human rights treaty nor recognized in the EU Treaties or the Charter of Fundamental Rights and therefore cannot be presented as an EU value. On the contrary, the EU’s founding values require respect for human dignity and the protection of life, which must remain at the core of the European project.

Using EU institutions to promote divisive ideological agendas undermines trust in the European project and disregards the voices of millions of EU citizens who have repeatedly called for the Union to remain within its legal mandate.

Pr. Tonio Borg, president of One of Us affirmed that “Today’s vote is a missed opportunity for the European Parliament to act as guardian of the Treaties. Promoting ideological demands beyond EU competence weakens democracy, disrespects Member States, and ultimately erodes citizens’ trust in the European Union”.

One of Us European Federation will untiringly continue to promote the right to life, democratic pluralism, and respect for EU law, and will remain vigilant against further attempts to instrumentalize EU institutions for ideological purposes.
