This is how to turn democracy into a laughing stock. The pro-abortion campaign “My Voice, My Choice” has spent an officially stated budget of 1 million Euro to propagandize the killing of unborn children. This makes the self-described “grassroots campaign” the most expensive European Citizens’ Initiative of all times. Not the most successful one, though – because that distinction goes to the pro-life campaign “ONE OF US, which used a far smaller budget to collect a far greater number of statements of support. The European Union’s hermetic institutions, however, prefer to fulfil the wishes of those who have much money but little popular support over listening to a citizens’ initiative with little money but a lot of support. When 1.7 million Europeans asked the Commission to ensure that no money from the EU budget be used for abortion, the Commission ignored them. When 1.1 million ask the Commission to find ways to funnel taxpayer money into the pockets of the abortion industry, the same Commission bends backwards to make it happen, inciting Member States to misappropriate money from the European Social Fund (ESF+).
And to make sure that the so-called “grassroot activists”, who have been lavishly funded by the commercial abortion industry, suffer no shortage of budget, some leftist members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe have now found another creative way of funding a fake “civil society group” with taxpayers’ money: they award a prize to it.
The so-called “Vigdís Prize for women’s empowerment” is named after Iceland’s former President Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, allegedly the first woman in the world to be elected as a head of state. But there is of course a difference between the empowerment that results from being honourably elected to a public office, and a quite different type of “empowerment” that consists in telling people that they have the “right” to kill her own child.
What kind of empowerment is this supposed to be – an empowerment of the strong at the expense of the weak? An empowerment of the ruthless and selfish at the expense of the fragile and dependent? No woman that is not morally corrupted to the marrow of her bones would ever want to be empowered in this peculiar way.
By faming the deliberate killing of healthy babies as “empowerment of women”, the CoE Parliamentary Assembly puts is rubber stamp and signature on a civilizational backslide, a return to the darkest barbarianism. In ancient Rome, it was the pater familias who decided on the fate of a newborn baby: if he picked it up, it meant that he was accepting it as part of his family – if he didn’t, it was left to die on the garbage heap. “Planned Parenthood”, in pre-Christian times.
The so-called “empowerment” lies in the fact that, thanks to the legalisation of abortion, today it is women who have the exclusive right to determine whether or not their child will be allowed to live. The child, however, is not “empowered” – it is deprived of its basic human rights.
The fact that the political elites celebrating this kind of “empowerment” claim to act in the name of “human rights” and “rule of laws” tells you all you need to know about them.
